I'm not planning my reading far ahead this year, will just see what fits.
1. The Book of Ones (2014) or Grand Mistresses of Genre Fiction (2018)
Anne McCaffrey "Dragonflight"
It's fifty years old and still readable. Not as revolutionary as it was, and I'm not convinced to read more of the series, but it made a good opening for the year.

| 2. The Tolkien Reading Challenge (2015)
JRR Tolkien / Christopher Tolkien "The Book of Lost Tales I"
Found on my bookshelf, don't remember reading it before.
I am not enough of a fanatic or a literary historian to properly appreciate the minutiae of
the origin of Middle-Earth. This book didn't hold my interest and will go to the public
bookcase. The Silmarillion seems to be my limit.
Next:
3. 2014 Detective SFF Challenge
Lou Anders (ed.) "Sideways in Crime"
An anthology of alternate history crime stories (the challenge said novels, but close enough).
Should be fun. |

| "Sideways in Crime" was indeed fun. Some of the stories were excellent, I clearly need to read more AH... sometime.
4. Somewhere Out There (2015)
Roger Zelazny "Doorways in the Sand"
I like the story a lot, but Zelazny just rubs me the wrong way. Too much jumping around, and just a little too weird to be thoroughly enjoyable. |

Frederik Pohl / Cyril M. Kornbluth "The Space Merchants"
Thoroughly enjoyable. Not dated at all. If not for the absence of cellphones and internet this book could have been written last year. Both serious and hilarious. I highly recommend this. |

I agree that this challenge "forces" us to explores books and genres that we might otherwise avoid. I definitely have a few books planned for this challenge that I may otherwise not read. |

Philip K. Dick "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"
Interesting and worth the read, but the (original) movie is better.
The reason why I haven't updated this challenge for so long was to work up to:
7. Unfinished Business (2017)
Robert Jordan / Brandon Sanderson "A Memory of Light"
Absolutely worth rereading the whole "Wheel of Time" just to get the finale. Sanderson did a truly great job completing this series.
Puuuh... I need something completely different now... |
