I think I just didn't like this book as much as I wanted to. I appreciate the classic horror story set up, assembling a group of characters and sending them off to an isolated place where they will have Big Troubles. I always like the way Mira Grant (Seanan McGuire) brings together a diverse (in multiple ways) group of characters and sometimes even with a just brief sketch can create a real person for you to root for (until she murders them, of course). At a certain point though, this book needed to stop doing backstories and get on with the main story. Even after a very good first death, suddenly we were back introducing new characters. I found the pacing sluggish when I really wanted things to get ramped up. There may have been too many story threads, or perhaps I was spoiled since I read the prequel novella which I found much tighter paced. But, there was good marine science here and a well-worked through science-y scenario to explain the killer mermaids. I will still read any future installments.
