This is definitely not my favorite Vonnegut, and I didn't even think I liked it that much until the very last chapters when - as often happens - Vonnegut's philosophical inquiries coalesced and made the whole book feel worthwhile. Even when Vonnegut's writing techniques get a little annoying or repetitive, or the meandering plot feels a little too random, his books alwasy end up feeling personal and profound. I also think that he is the only SF writer I'm aware of who tackles military themes in a way that truly demonstrates how stupid war is, rather than fetishizing it.
