David Mitchell doing his David Mitchell thing - telling a story that spans multiple time periods, using different characters' voices. His writing is great and I think he does a fantastic job in creating unique voices for each of his characters. I've read other books where authors attempt to do multiple first-person perspectives, but somehow the voices all end up sounding the same; this doesn't happen with Mitchell's writing. He's really good at changing up language, attitude, personality, etc. The only reason I didn't rate this story higher is that the "why" and "how" of the central plot felt a little overwrought (and was revealed through several sort of awkward expository conversations.) And, while there are creepy scenes, it's not that scary of a book. But, on the other hand, the story felt original and overall it was a quick and enjoyable read.
