This story starts out with an interesting explration of the interaction of drugs and consciousness, but does not follow throug on it to the end. Instead, it turns into a half-baked cyber-conspiracy story born of the background on which the drug topic is built. It's not clear why the author basically abandons the main theme for a different one, but the two stories are attached at the hip.

It was disappointing to have such interesting explorations into drug experience and culture, then leave them almost completely, with the synthetic drug little more than an afterthought. There is a perunctory tying up of loose ends at the conclusion of the book with does not satisfy either.
