Who Fears Death – Nnedi Okorafor
This is a coming of age story set in a futuristic or alternate reality Africa. Onyesonwu is a child conceived in rape. Her life as an Ewu (half breed) child is not an easy one, but she does have close knit bonds with her Eleventh Rite mates (coming of age ceremony) and an Ewu boy. This book shows the fallibility of humans, the importance of friendship and loyalty, the importance of learning, and how these traits provide strength in the face of adversity.
The characters here are well developed. The plot is easily followed, i.e. there is one and it progresses in a logical manner (unlike some of the books I've read for this challenge, where – boom - stuff just happens). A well written book and worth the read.
