What a disappointment. This could have been a great novel if, for instance, Neal Stephenson had written it. Suzuki's writing is stiff, his characters lifeless, the science no more complicated than in a Dan Brown novel, and the supernatural element simply ridiculous. Oh, and it totally fails as a horror/thriller novel. Was this seriously the best among the 2012 Shirley Jackson nominees? I find that hard to believe.
