Found a copy of this in the used bookstore yesterday. It's called "What Happened to the Corbetts" ("Ordeal" in the US release), by Nevil Shute, author of the famous apocalyptic novel "On The Beach". Published just before WWII, it's sort of an alternate history, prophetic in war's effects on the British people.
