Random quote: "Swords, Lances, arrows, machine guns, and even high explosives have had far less power over the fates of nations than the typhus louse, the plague flea, and the yellow-fever mosquito. Civilizations have retreated from the plasmodium of malaria, and armies have crumbled into rabbles under the onslaught of cholera spirilla, or of dysentery and typhoid bacilli. Huge areas have been devastated by the trypanosome that travels on the wings of the tsetse fly, and generations have been harassed by the syphilis of a courtier. War and conquest and that herd existence which is an accompaniment of what we call civilization have merely set the stage for these more powerful agents of human tragedy." ― Hans Zinsser, Rats, Lice and History

SF fans -
I read a book ~10 years ago of SF short stories by one author. The story I remember most vividly was about a man who grows up as a barbarian on a world that is populated by giant savage insects. I believe that the world was a terraforming project gone wrong (or abandoned) and that the hero eventually made contact with civilization and becomes the ruler of his world.

The stories were good, but dated. I had the definite feeling that the author was writing from a mid-1900's viewpoint.

I have searched for the author, but can't figure out who he is. Anybody recognize my description?

regards,
NateT

Nate,
It could be the Eric John Stark stories by Leigh Brackett. Check out this link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_John_Stark
I've only read one of the later novels, but the early ones might be in short story form.

Interesting ... but, no, that's not it. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Dredging the mind a bit, but I seem to remember that Jandar of Callisto (Lin Carter's book) was captured by an insect type race of people. Not sure they were short stories though but they certainly fit the older-style of writing.

I haven't read it yet, but the back cover blurb of Planets of Adventure by Murray Leinster seems to match your description.

Think it's "The Forgotten Planet" by Murray Leinster, a novel stitched together from 3 stories. Terraforming, giant insects, humans descended down many generations; all the elements seem to be there, and it's from 1954. Good luck!

Planets of Adventure can be found here for $6.83 on Kindle: http://j.mp/12ZCLam
The Forgotten planet can be found here for $1, also on Kindle: http://j.mp/17jEdtg

Dead tree versions of both are also available on those pages. I hope one (or both, as they seem to contain the same story) of these is the right one.
