History

Solaris was founded in 2007 by BL Publishing as an independent imprint, to trade alongside their existing licence-based imprints Black Flame and the Black Library. Under Consulting Editor George Mann, the goal was to publish a mix of new and traditional science fiction, fantasy and horror, by new and familiar authors alike, and to fill the gap between the large-scale mass-market publishers who only backed prolific writers with huge readerships and the small genre press whose limited scope and distribution kept them in relative obscurity.

In two years, we’ve published books ranging from the gritty, hard-SF Xenopath to the high-octane, madcap War Machine, and from the creepy Necroscope: The Touch to the swashbuckling Dark Lord. We’ve discovered new gems like the hugely successful Gail Z. Martin and snagged old favourites like Brian Lumley and Eric Brown. We’ve published seven anthologies, including new science fiction and fantasy, steampunk, and stories inspired by the great Edgar Allan Poe, with contributions by some of the best-loved and recognised names in science fiction.

In September 2009, Solaris was taken over by Rebellion, to publish alongside their existing imprint Abaddon. The Rebellion team are very excited by the challenges and opportunities the new titles and writers present us, and thrilled at the chance to continue in the excellent tradition set by George Mann and the BL team. With the writers and material we’ve inherited, we’re confident we can only go from strength to strength.

More than anything, Solaris exists to publish fantastic books by great authors, and to bring your attention, as a reader, a plethora of exciting new stories and novels.
